Page 3 Upper Elementary (9-12) Local Authors David Small, his lat-est illustrations can be found in the book by Elise Broach, When Dinosaurs Came with Every-thing Janet Ruth Heller, How the Moon Re-gained Her Shape, illustrated by Ben Hodson.  A delight-ful way to learn about the phases of the moon. Amelia Hansen has illustrated Are You Ready for Me? Writ-ten by Claire Buch-wald. K to 2 easy reading level.   Captured! A Boy Trapped in the Civil War, Mary Blair Immel  A riv-eting book about a boy who gets trapped in the Civil War. A must read for ages 8 to 12.  Invention of Hugo  Cabret, Brian Selznick. A visual masterpiece as well as an engaging story about an orphan who lives in the walls of the Paris train station.   The Bartimaeus Trilogy, Jonathan Stroud Nathaniel, a magician’s apprentice, summons a powerful djinni  Barti-maeus. For ages 10 and up.  Wayside School  Series,Louis Sachar:   Silly things are always happening at the way-side school. Great short stories about the wacki-est school around. For ages 8 to 12  The Thief Lord,  Cornilia Funke: Prosper and Bo are orphans who escape to Venice so they will not be  separated and become a part of the Thief Lords “gang”. For ages 9 to 12.  Frindle, Andrew Clements: A cute book about a boy who does a science experiment and renames pens “frindle” for fun.   Matilda, Roald Dahl   Great read aloud about precocious Matililda and her amazing talent.   Shadow Children Series, Margaret Patterson Haddix: Luke is a shadow child, a third child, which is forbidden by the population  police.   Ella Enchanted, Gail Carson Levine. Ella was given the gift of obedience at birth by a fairy, which she has found is little more then a curse.   Hidden Talents, David Lubar. Martin and his friends are called losers. But they are not; they each have their own hid-den talents.   Golden Hamster Saga Se-ries, Dietlof Reiche. Freddy is tired of his treadmill life in the pet store, then he is adopted and has many funny misadventures. For Ages 7 to 10. A Single Shard, Linda Sue Park. A story of Tree-ear, an orphan who wants to learn to be-come a potter.   Main Street Series, Ann M. Martin: The  latest is called ‘Tis the Season, which centers on Flora and Rubie’s first Christmas without their parents.   Spiderwick Chronicles,  Tony Di Terlizzi. The ex-citing adventures of the Grace family as they ex-plore the Field Guide to fairies and goblins.  Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Rick Riodan  Percy Jackson is a nor-mal kid who suddenly learns Poseidon, the God of the Sea, is his father.   Warriors, Erin Hunter A neat series about a house kitten that leaves home and becomes in-volved with warrior kit-ties. A wonderful series. For ages 10 and up.  Ghosthunters, Cornilia Funke.  Tome takes on the many ghosts he happens upon. For ages 7 to 10. Carole Marsh Mystery Series Take a trip to a real place and learn all kinds of facts while reading a fun mystery. These mysteries are written with teaching in mind.  There are sev-eral reading levels.

Fred Stays with Me!, Nancy Coffelt:
This book, told from the point of view of a little girl whose parents are di-
vorced, follows the girl and her dog as they move from one house to the
other. For ages 4-8
Three Stories You can Read to your Dog, Sara Swan Miller:
Make you dog happy (and practice reading) by reading these stories to your
dog. This book encourages the kids to read to a nonjudgmental being… your

Judy Moody, Megan McDonald:

Mr. Putter and Tabby Series, Cynthia Rylant:
Beautifully illustrated by Arthur Howard this series follows Mr. Putter and his

stars. For ages 6 to 9.  Large print and simple words.
Fairy Realm, Emily Rodda:
Great beginning chapter book series for kids who are into fairies.  The series
is about Jessie, who travels to the fairy realm and has amazing adventures.
For ages 7 to 10.
I Saw A Moose Today, Anne Stewart:
Magically illustrated by Brent Spint, a book about a girl with a huge imagina-
tion who sees all kinds of woodland creatures everywhere. For ages 3 to 10.
